Monday was a recovery day for my partner after the very busy birthday weekend. Jasper headed off to school, and I returned to work. After everything the family had packed into the previous few days, a quieter day was probably exactly what she needed.
Tuesday and Wednesday brought us back to our normal routines. Work for Mom and Dad, school for Jasper, and the usual rhythm of family life.
There was one difference, though.
The suitcases came out of the closet.
Thursday was another school, work, and swimming lesson day. By Friday, however, we were officially in travel mode. My partner and I both took the day off to finish packing for a road trip to Ontario.
It was Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, but our reason for heading north was family. My partner’s aunt and uncle were in Ontario, giving us the opportunity to visit them on this side of the world and spend some time together.
After Jasper’s half day at school, we loaded up the car and hit the road.
And then the driving began.
We spent around an hour at the border, followed by who knows how long sitting in traffic. What should have been a more straightforward journey turned into an eight-hour adventure.
Eventually, though, we made it.
Pizza in hand, we settled in for the night. After a long day in the car, the pizza tasted particularly good, and there wasn’t much left to do beyond eat, relax, and get some sleep.
Niagara Falls: The Detour
Saturday started with some fun at the park before we headed south toward Niagara Falls.
Now, here’s where the planning gets interesting.
We were staying near family in Oakville, and the trip to Niagara Falls meant driving past our general destination and then coming back again. A few people in the group hadn’t seen the falls before, so we decided to make the trip.
Would I do it again?
Honestly, probably not.
The falls are incredible, and I’m glad everyone had the opportunity to see them. But between the long drive the day before, the extra driving on Saturday, and keeping a two-year-old entertained, we were exhausted.
Sometimes you make a decision because you want everyone to have a good experience, and sometimes you learn afterward that the simpler plan would have been better.
This was probably one of those times.
We eventually made it back for dinner, where we enjoyed paneer before heading back to the hotel late in the evening.
Of course, the night wasn’t quite finished.
There was still some hockey to watch, a beer to enjoy, and a late-night burger calling my name.
Then it was finally time for bed.
Sunday: Family, Faith, and a Better Evening
Sunday was much more enjoyable.
We visited a lovely local temple before heading back to Oakville to spend time with my partner’s cousin.
It was a relaxed evening with family, the kind of visit that had been the point of the trip from the beginning.
Looking back, I couldn’t help thinking about how much better the weekend might have felt if we’d skipped the Niagara Falls detour. We could have spent more time with family, avoided some of the extra driving, and given everyone a little more room to relax.
Still, that’s part of traveling with family. You try to fit everything in because you want to make the most of the time together.
Sometimes it works perfectly.
Sometimes you end up wishing you’d left a little more room in the schedule.
At least we had a lovely evening to finish the weekend.
The Road Home
Monday meant one thing: time to head back to Ohio.
I’m not the biggest fan of long drives. Anything beyond three hours starts testing my patience, so after the journey north and the weekend’s extra miles, getting home safely was the priority.
We made it back without any major issues, and there was something genuinely satisfying about finally walking through our own front door.
Our dog had been staying at my parents’ house while we were away, so we reunited with him and settled back into home life.
No more hotel rooms.
No more traffic.
No more checking how much longer the drive would take.
Just home, family, and a chance to catch our breath before another busy week began.
What I Took Away From the Weekend
This trip reminded me that family connections are worth making the effort for.
Seeing my partner’s aunt and uncle, spending time with cousins, visiting a local temple, and giving Jasper the opportunity to be around more of his extended family made the journey worthwhile.
But it also reminded me that making the most of a trip doesn’t mean trying to fit everything into it.
Sometimes the extra attraction, the additional drive, or the one more stop doesn’t add as much as we expect.
Sometimes the best memories come from sitting around a table, sharing a meal, and catching up with people you don’t get to see often enough.
And sometimes the best moment of a road trip is arriving home safely, greeting the dog, and realizing you don’t have to get back in the car anytime soon.
We had a long weekend, plenty of family time, some excellent food, and a few lessons learned along the way.
Now it’s time to unpack, get back into our routines, and see what the next week brings.
Because with work, daycare, family, and everything else going on, there’s always another adventure waiting around the corner.
