From Sick Days to Sea Breeze

A surprise cruise, some sandy toes, and a well-earned break after a week of illness and firsts.

After a rough Saturday, we took Jasper on a trip to the pediatrician. Not quite the milestone we were hoping for, but an important one nonetheless. The diagnosis? Some kind of infection—thankfully, not conjunctivitis. Still, he hit two big firsts: his first ear infection and his first prescription of amoxicillin. Tough start, but he’s already on the mend.

With a big trip coming up, we decided to keep him home from part-time daycare for the week—and honestly, it was the right call. The illness made its way through the whole household. First, my mother-in-law got it (no surprise—she spends the most time with him). Then my partner, especially after those sleepless nights when all Jasper wanted was her. And just when I thought I had dodged it… nope. One night, with my partner completely worn out, it was my turn. By morning, I knew I was sick too.

We’ve been trying to get everyone healthy before traveling, but it hasn’t been easy.

If you haven’t yet, check out the latest photo on our Buy Me a Coffee page. Yes, Jasper has his own page! It’s where I share more personal updates—some public, some reserved, like a Mother’s Day letter to his mom and my end-of-year reflections. There’s more content coming soon (both free and paid), and if you feel inclined to support us with a coffee, we’d be so thankful. But no pressure—nothing there takes away from what I share here.

Now, about that airplane window photo—did you guess where we were headed?

If you guessed Florida—specifically Miami—you were right!

So, why Miami? Because we pulled off a surprise for my mother-in-law: a weekend cruise to the Bahamas! A small thank-you for all her love, help, and sacrifice.

We landed in Miami late, grabbed some food, and got Jasper to bed. Honestly, we were all still recovering from being sick, so a quiet night in was perfect. But Thursday brought the big reveal—we boarded a shuttle from the hotel, and it wasn’t until we reached the pier that my mother-in-law realized what was happening. The surprise? A 3-day cruise on the Carnival Conquest through the Bahamas.

Jasper loved every moment of the adventure. He got to touch everything—from the soft sand and salty beach water to the cozy accommodations on the ship. It was a beautiful sensory experience for him and a much-needed relaxing break for all of us before jumping back into the rhythm of work and daycare.

Can’t wait to share more photos and moments from the trip on the page soon!
