Last week started quietly enough.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were mostly normal. Jasper was back in his usual routine, Mom and Dad were working, and we were spending a lot of time getting the house ready for visitors.
Nani and Nanu are arriving this week, so there was plenty to look forward to.
Then Thursday happened.
And everything changed.
Jasper picked up a bug and, like most two-year-olds, decided to share it with the entire household.
By the time we made it through the long Labor Day weekend, both Parvi and I had caught it too.
Suddenly, our carefully planned week became something completely different.
When one person in the house gets sick, parents immediately start doing the math.
How long until someone else gets it?
What happens with daycare?
Can we still make our plans?
How are we going to get any sleep?
The answer to that last one?
Not much.
And somehow, life kept moving anyway.
We found some water in the basement and scheduled an inspection. We started looking at permanent lighting solutions around the house. Work was busy. There were errands, preparations, and a house to get ready for family coming from India.
There was plenty that needed to get done.
But something felt different this time.
My priorities were clearer.
A few years ago, I probably would have been thinking about everything I wasn’t accomplishing.
The workout I missed.
The project that wasn’t moving.
The number on the scale.
The things around the house that still needed fixing.
Instead, I found myself watching Jasper.
Checking on him.
Making sure he was comfortable.
Waiting for that little bit of energy to come back into his eyes.
Watching for the moment when he started acting like himself again.
Everything else could wait.
One morning, after several nights of terrible sleep, a holiday weekend, and probably more pizza than I needed, I stepped on the scale.
The number was higher than I wanted.
And my first thought surprised me.
It wasn’t frustration.
It wasn’t I need to fix this.
It was simply:
As long as Jasper is okay, we’ll be okay.
That might be one of the biggest changes parenthood has made in me.
The responsibilities haven’t gotten smaller.
If anything, they’ve multiplied.
Work still needs attention.
The house needs attention.
My own goals need attention.
Family is arriving.
The calendar keeps filling up.
But when your child isn’t feeling well, everything suddenly gets sorted into its proper place.
You realize what is urgent.
What can wait.
And what never really mattered as much as you thought it did.
So this week wasn’t what we planned.
It wasn’t productive in the way I normally measure productivity.
It wasn’t healthy in the way I normally measure health.
It wasn’t particularly exciting.
But it was a week of taking care of each other.
And maybe that’s productive enough.
Hopefully, by the time Nani and Nanu arrive, we’re all feeling better and ready for the chaos, hugs, and family time ahead.
Because sometimes the week you don’t plan for ends up teaching you exactly what you needed to remember.
Take care of the people you love. Everything else can wait. ❤️
