The Little Things
A week of Splash Days, swimming lessons, dinosaurs, family, and watching Jasper discover the world one little moment at a time.
This was a really good week with Jasper.
Not because anything huge happened.
Because a lot of little things did.
Monday was a pretty normal day around here. Work, daycare, dinner, and the usual rhythm of getting everyone where they needed to be. Nothing exciting on the calendar, but I’ve started to appreciate those ordinary days more. Not every memory needs to come from a big event.
Sometimes, the routine is the memory.
Tuesday brought Splash Day at school. Jasper was excited, and of course he had his own name for it, which somehow made it even better. At two years old, a day filled with water and his friends is about as good as it gets.
Wednesday was a little different.
Jasper spent part of the morning at school and then got to visit Mom’s office or “Mom’s school,” as he calls it. After seeing where Mom spends part of her day, he headed back to daycare for the afternoon.
I love moments like that because he’s starting to understand that Mom and Dad have lives outside of being his parents. He gets little glimpses into our world while we’re getting to watch him build his own.
Thursday was swimming.
He was a little tired, but the progress continues to be one of my favorite things to watch. Every lesson seems to bring something new.
This week, it was his kicking.
It might not sound like much, but that’s how progress works with a two-year-old. You don’t necessarily notice it from one week to the next.
Then suddenly you realize he’s doing something that he couldn’t do a few months ago.
The confidence is growing.
The comfort is growing.
And, most importantly, he’s having fun.
Friday was calm. School, work, home, and getting ready for the weekend.
Saturday was something completely different.
We took Jasper to a prehistoric kids experience where dinosaurs were projected throughout the rooms. He could walk around, play, and interact with everything happening around him.
And he loved it.
That’s one of my favorite things about this age.
Everything is still new.
A dinosaur isn’t just something on a screen.
It’s an experience.
Swimming isn’t just a lesson.
It’s learning something new.
Going to Mom’s office isn’t just a trip to work.
It’s going to “Mom’s school.”
The world is still full of firsts.
Sunday brought us back to the Gurdwara.
It was good to reconnect with friends, spend time in prayer, and take a little time to reflect on the opportunities and adventures ahead.
Life gets busy quickly.
Work gets busy.
Schedules fill up.
Projects grow.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it, Jasper keeps reminding me to slow down and actually pay attention.
Because when I look back at this week, the biggest memory probably won’t be Splash Day.
It won’t be swimming.
It won’t be the dinosaurs.
It won’t even be Sunday at the Gurdwara.
It will be Jasper experiencing all of it.
Laughing.
Learning.
Trying.
Growing.
Discovering.
And seeing a world that is still completely new through his eyes.
These moments probably don’t feel significant while we’re living them.
But I have a feeling that years from now, they’re going to be the moments I remember most.
Maybe that’s what makes an ordinary week a really good one
