The Water Week
A week of water, family, reflection, and the quiet milestones that remind us how quickly childhood moves
Some weeks have a big story.
Others are built from small moments.
This felt like one of those weeks.
Monday through Wednesday were pretty normal around here. Nothing major happened. Just the familiar rhythm of work, daycare, dinners, and getting everyone where they needed to be.
Then the weather decided to get involved.
Daycare had planned a splash day for the kids, but the heat had other ideas. The schedule shifted to Thursday, which meant Jasper’s week suddenly included a lot more water than usual.
Splash day at daycare.
Swimming lessons after school.
More time in the water than he was used to.
By Thursday evening, he was completely worn out.
It’s funny how kids can put every ounce of energy into having fun and then suddenly look like they’ve run a marathon.
Friday was quiet. One of those days when the weekend already seemed to be beginning.
Then Saturday became two very different stories happening at the same time.
I attended a funeral for my second cousin’s uncle while Parvi and Jasper made their way to the zoo.
Life has a strange way of doing that.
One family gathering was centered around saying goodbye.
The other was about making memories.
Both were reminders of how quickly time moves and how important it is to be present for the people we love.
I made it to the zoo before the day was over and got to enjoy a snack with them before taking a ride on the merry-go-round with Jasper.
It wasn’t the biggest part of the day.
It wasn’t the longest.
But it became one of those moments that somehow stays with you.
Then Sunday brought something we had been missing.
A return to the gurudwara.
Those visits always feel grounding in a way that is difficult to explain. After a busy week, it was good to slow down, reconnect with our community, and spend time together.
This visit also gave us something new to celebrate.
Jasper’s hair is finally long enough for him to wear a more traditional Sikh head covering with his hair tied up.
It was a small change.
But it also didn’t feel small at all.
It was one of those quiet parenting moments where you realize your child has reached a new stage while you were busy living everyday life.
There was no announcement.
No big milestone celebration.
Just another reminder that he is growing.
Looking back, I don’t think the story of this week was work, schedules, or everything that usually fills the calendar.
It was water.
Splash day.
Swimming lessons.
A trip to the zoo.
A ride on the merry-go-round.
A return to the gurudwara.
And a little boy growing up one week at a time.
Sometimes the biggest weeks aren’t the ones with the biggest events.
They’re the ones where ordinary moments quietly become memories.
And someday, I think I’ll look back at this week and realize that the water was never really the story.
The story was watching Jasper grow—one small moment at a time.
