After our Canadian road trip, it was time to get back into the usual routine.
Tuesday and Wednesday were fairly straightforward. Jasper returned to school, Mom and Dad returned to work, and everyone settled back into the rhythm of everyday life. After a busy weekend away, there was something nice about having a few normal days without a suitcase in sight.
Thursday brought another swimming lesson after work and school. Swimming has become one of those regular parts of our week that I genuinely look forward to. Watching Jasper grow more comfortable in the water has been incredible, and every lesson brings another opportunity to see how far he has come.
Unfortunately, Thursday also marked the beginning of something less exciting.
I started feeling sick.
And as I write this on Tuesday, I’m still not entirely over it.
So much for easing into another week!
A Weekend at a Slower Pace
With Dad under the weather, the weekend became much quieter than usual.
There were no major adventures, ambitious plans, or packed schedules. Mostly, I focused on resting and trying to recover while my partner and Jasper carried on with their weekend.
Saturday did bring one particularly nice moment. A friend came over in the afternoon, someone we hadn’t seen in two years.
Two years is a long time between visits, especially when life has a habit of moving so quickly. Between work, family responsibilities, travel, and everything else that fills the calendar, it’s easy to let even good friendships drift into the background.
It was great to reconnect and spend some time together again. I was feeling a little better by then, which made the visit possible, even if I still wasn’t back to full strength.
Sometimes the best thing about a quiet weekend is that it leaves room for the people you haven’t seen in far too long.
Sunday was a different story for me. I spent the day resting while my partner, Jasper, and her parents, Nani and Nanu, headed to the Gurdwara.
I would have liked to join them, but sometimes the sensible choice is to stay home, take care of yourself, and give your body the time it needs.
It wasn’t the most exciting Sunday, but it was probably what I needed.
A Surprise Swimming Lesson
Monday brought the return of school and work, along with an unexpected development in Jasper’s swimming journey.
He had a surprise swimming session designed to see how he manages in the water without Mom or Dad in the pool with him.
This is a pretty big step.
Until now, swimming has been something we’ve done together. We’ve been right there beside him, helping him feel comfortable, encouraging him to try new things, and watching his confidence grow.
But that stage won’t last forever.
In a few short months, Jasper will finish his current class for two-year-olds and move toward the next level, where parents won’t be in the pool with the children.
That means we need to start preparing him for a different kind of swimming lesson.
Monday’s session was an opportunity to see where he stands.
And the verdict?
We’re not quite there yet.
That’s okay, though.
He’s still little, and being comfortable in the water with Mom and Dad is very different from being comfortable without us right beside him. It’s another skill to learn, another transition to navigate, and another opportunity for him to develop confidence at his own pace.
We’ll begin making that transition slowly, giving him time to get used to the idea rather than expecting him to master it overnight.
It’s funny how something as simple as a swimming lesson can become another reminder that childhood is full of transitions.
One day you’re holding your toddler in the pool. Before you know it, you’re standing at the side, watching him do something on his own.
We’re not at that point just yet, but it’s getting closer.
The Lesson in a Quiet Week
Looking back, this wasn’t a week filled with big events.
There was work, school, swimming, a visit from an old friend, a trip to the Gurdwara, and a lot of resting.
But there were still a few things worth remembering.
First, sometimes the best plan is to have no plan at all. Getting sick wasn’t exactly on my schedule, but it reminded me that not every weekend needs to be productive. Sometimes you need to slow down and let yourself recover.
Second, relationships deserve time. Seeing a friend after two years was a welcome reminder that even when life gets busy, reconnecting with people matters.
And finally, Jasper continues to grow in ways that aren’t always obvious until a new challenge appears.
Swimming without Mom or Dad in the pool might not sound like a major milestone to everyone. But for us, it represents the beginning of another stage of independence.
We’ll take it slowly, celebrate the little wins, and keep showing up.
As for me, I’m hoping the rest of this week involves a little less coughing and a little more energy.
Dad has work to do, Jasper has plenty more to learn, and there’s a family life waiting to be enjoyed once I’m feeling like myself again.
Sometimes progress means taking the next step.
And sometimes it means knowing when to stay home, rest, and let the next step wait until tomorrow.
❤️
