When Mom’s at Work, Jasper’s at Play
Finding the perfect daycare where little feet dance, tiny hands explore, and new friendships blossom while Mom conquers her day.
This past week has been a big shift for Jasper—and for all of us. My partner, Jasper’s mom, spent two days out of the house working at her office in Cleveland, Ohio. Since we both typically work from home, it’s a rare occurrence, and it made for a different dynamic at home. Thankfully, with my mother-in-law still staying with us from India, the surroundings felt familiar for Jasper—just no Mom popping in during lunch breaks.
One of the highlights of the week was Jasper’s very first swimming lesson at the local Goldfish Academy. I was in the water with him, and he absolutely loved it! Watching him splash and explore was such a joy, but the cold winter temperatures made post-swim wet hair a challenge. As much as he enjoyed it, we’re thinking of holding off on regular lessons until spring when the weather warms up. It’s definitely on the list of near-future activities, though.
Even higher on the priority list is finding a daycare for Jasper. This is a new experience for my partner, who didn’t attend daycare growing up, but it’s something I’m very familiar with, having been a daycare kid myself. While we’re fortunate that we don’t need daycare, we’re choosing this route to give Jasper more opportunities to interact with other kids. Social exposure is so important, and we want him to feel comfortable with other people, especially as he transitions into preschool and beyond. Many daycares also offer preschool and kindergarten programs, so getting him started young could be a great advantage.
On a personal note, my 2025 goals are off to a strong start. I’ve been focusing on consistency and movement in my daily routine, and I’m happy to report some positive progress. Though I didn’t start the year with a set number in mind, I’ve already shed about 7-8 pounds from where I think I started (around 180 lbs). More importantly, I feel better—both physically and mentally. Reintroducing prayer and regular services into my life has brought a sense of peace and focus. While I don’t want to frame this as a religious journey for everyone, I’d encourage anyone to lean into whatever practices make them feel grounded and mentally healthy.
The week ended on a bit of a challenging note as my partner came down with an illness after her office trips. With my first work trip away from Jasper coming up next week, I’ve been doing my best to dodge the sickness while juggling everything at home. It’s a bittersweet milestone—leaving Jasper for the first time—but I’m hopeful it’ll be a productive and successful week ahead.
